Governance and Democracy
After two decades of civil war, realizing sustainable human development in Somalia requires a reasonable level of democracy. Advocating and establishing democratic institutions will give the Somali people the ability to influence their government to prioritize equitable and sustainable national development; as well as creating a political environment where people are able to demand more effective policies to help transform our society – and in which their leaders are accountable.
To this end, the Hayaan Institute emphasizes the realization of accountable and transparent governance systems. The institute’s work in this area focuses on promotion of good governance and democracy as a way of enhancing the capacity of public institutions and improving policy, strategy and legal frameworks. The institute aims to embolden systems supporting transparency, accountability, citizen participation, social auditing, and the right to information.
